Hi! Thanks for visiting Way of the Artchemist and coming to this page to find out more about me! My name is Bernard, I’m an artist based in Manchester, UK; currently looking for work and/or work experience. I specialize in fine art, illustration work in, but not limited to, character design, concept artwork, and manga illustration.

My Artchemist Way

I keep drawing and learning new ways to improve my drawing skills; because doing what I love and then become a better artist is my Artchemist Way! Artists create their masterpieces with the loving vibration of creative energy through intentions of thoughts and visualizations into actualization. My artwork is an outer expression of my feelings and perceptions from my inner heart and soul’s intent projected outward. I hope to spread love, peace, and happiness with my art and to touch and inspire as many people as possible, in the same way I was inspired by my favorite artists.

I’ve liked to draw ever since I can remember; My childhood in Hong Kong I could watch alot of anime cartoons and I would enjoy drawing the characters and scenes from the show from memory.

There are many shows that have influenced my drawing style one of the biggest was of course Dragon Ball Z. I was bought the manga volumes as well that made me very happy to read and marvel at the art, and then I enjoyed drawing copying out of them.

I like to put alot of detail into my drawings, most of all the people and places I would spend much time doing shading on them. I read Hareluya II BOY and Slam Dunk and liked the artwork in the characters very much because of the realism and the level of detail put in. I was so inspired by all the art and superb stories from all these different mangas that, by my teens; I already knew I wanted to be an artist when I leave school.

The art from video games that I played have influenced my drawing and creative vision too; I was captivated by the story and immersed in the worlds of all the Final Fantasy titles on Playstation, and enjoyed feeling like I was watching a movie in the cinematic cut-scenes of the Metal Gear Solid games.

The games artwork and graphics got me interested in character design and game development; So I decided to study Computer Games Technology at Liverpool John Moores University. I did my best on the modules that I most enjoyed which was User Interface design and 2D/3D Animation, and enjoyed working with my mates in games designing and development projects.

After 5 and grueling years of study, I graduated in 2008 with an honours degree. Needing to look for employment I decided to go back to doing what I love, by getting back to manga and anime because it’s what made me want to be an artist in the first place. I felt that I was happier to be the one that designs and draws the character, ink and colour it in, and the finished concept can be handed over to a 3D modeller.

I’ve got some personal projects on going right now surrounding manga illustration and creation because I like to tell stories!

Tools of the trade, Skills and Achievements!

The mediums I like to draw with are my pencils, ink marker pens, colour Letraset Promarkers, colour pencils, and oil paints.

I have lots of experience with producing my artwork digitally too; got a scanner and a graphics tablet handy so when I scan my hand drawn pictures into my PC I can do retouching and further drawing and coloring work to improve it as well.

Photoshop and Corel Painter are my main tools of the trade for digital drawing. I’m good at using Illustrator too but I find the first two programs I mentioned is enough for most of the work I’m doing.

I have good working level of expertise in using 3D studio max to build character models and animation demonstrated by my university dissertation on 3D head modelling and facial animation.

I was the artist and modeller in a game design and development coursework assignment during university. I made concept ideas with drawings of character designs, and entire storyboards to plan and illustrate how the game is going to work.

As a kid and in my high school days I drew alot of Dragon Ball Z fan comics. At around this time I watched alot of Mr.Bean and read many Old Master Q comics and these inspired me to create my own character and draw him in a comic series doing stupid and funny things aswell! A total of 3 chapters were written.
